Return Of Grand Rounds++
Yep, same route as last week — but now 16% faster!
I enjoyed last week’s “Grand Rounds with legs” ride so much that I decided to do it again, this time focusing on increasing my pace rather than increasing milage. Last time I averaged 13.1 mph at an intentionally relaxed pace, so today I focused on pushing myself a bit harder while still making sure I had enough left to finish comfortably. In summary, I succeeded — perhaps a bit too well.
The first dozen miles or so were still fairly relaxed as I warmed up and dodged rollerbladers around the lakes. The straight shot down Summit and back was my first chance to really push, but even then there were enough stops to keep the average speed down. It wasn’t ’till just past downtown Minneapolis that I was able to start raising that average, but once I reached the Victory Memorial parkway I was able to make up for lost time and cruise at 20 mph for a handful of miles. The ride south along Theodore Wirth Parkway is largely downhill, so I had a chance to rest for a bit while keeping the speed up.
By this time I was discovering that if anything I had ridden too conservatively for the first half of the ride and that I would finish with plenty of energy left over… not if I could help it! As I began the loop around St. Louis Park I grabbed the drops and keep the speed up, despite turning into a headwind. I ended up with 52 miles at 15.2 mph, or 2.1 mph faster than the same route a week ago. Aside from the sense of accomplishment, the nicest thing about the higher speed was the correspondingly shorter (time-wise) ride: just over 3 hours instead of just over 4. Leaves plenty of time for watching Law & Order.
The other exciting thing about this ride was that it included my first experimentations with performance-enhancing drugs! Or at least normal drugs used for performance-enhancing purposes. In hopes of preventing a recurrence of the occasionally intense knee pain I sometimes develop on longer rides, I took some ibuprofen just before the ride and some more about halfway through. Initial results are positive — the knee felt fine through the whole ride (as did the rest of me) — though more data is clearly needed before I can reach any scientific conclusions. Give me a few months and I’ll be a master blood doper.
