When I Grow Up
The highlight of last weekend’s kickoff training ride:
As I wrapped up the last handful of miles with a quick end-to-end tour of the Midtown Greenway, I heard the unmistakable sound of a nicely-tuned drivetrain whirring along right behind me — someone was on my wheel, drafting me. I was in a nice rhythm and traffic on the path was light, so I didn’t even look back; I just smiled, kept spinning, and enjoyed the opportunity to show off my l33t hand signals.
When we reached Hiawatha I stopped to turn around, and my temporary teammate pulled up next to me: a skinny, sunburned man of at least 80 with an endurance cyclist’s legs and a fast-looking recumbent. Wrinkled but muscular limbs sprouted almost comically out of a racing jersey and bib shorts.
“Thanks for pulling,” he said from behind sunglasses that wouldn’t have looked out of place on an X Games BMX rider. He had a classically wavery old-man voice that reminded me of Don Knotts.
I smiled and tried not to stare. “No problem!”
“The problem’s all here,” he said, chuckling as only old men can and resting a hand on his quadricep. He gave his leg a thankful pat and paused, remembering younger days in the saddle, or perhaps simply wondering — how many miles have I got left?
We wished each other a good ride and he pedaled away, towards Minnehaha Park and Fort Snelling. I headed west for home, and with each turn of the pedals felt a little bit older.
